WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Healthy food for your dog doesn't have to be expensive.
You may even have the ingredients to make a wholesome dog treat right in your own kitchen.
Jackie Oakes with Coastal K9 Bakery shared her recipe for Healthy Bark Bars.
HEALTHY BARK BARS
- 1 ¼ cup oat flour
- 1 ¼ cup rye flour
- ½ cup rolled oats (old fashioned NOT instant)
- ½ cup chopped UNSALTED roasted peanuts
- 1 egg, beaten
- ¼ cup molasses (regular or blackstrap, Jackie prefers blackstrap)
- About 1 to 1½ cup water – add slowly until dough is held together and not sticky
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine all ingredients together and mix thoroughly.
Roll by hand into small balls about 1 inch diameter and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
They can be placed close together as they do not spread while baking.
Press each ball flat with your hand or using the bottom of a glass.
Bake 18 to 22 minutes Let cool on a rack.
After cooling, store them in a plastic baggie in the refrigerator to maintain freshness.
