The Cargo District put the second stories on the first nine shipping container apartments in downtown Wilmington Tuesday morning.
Developer Leslie Smith of LS Smith Inc. said he thinks the neighborhood will revitalize the area.
“We wanted to take an otherwise forgotten community and start to build on it to make a true live-work community. That was the inspiration behind all of it. It was wanting to use something that we could upcycle like containers and make it affordable and make it functional, so if we took art architecture and functionality and put them all together then we would have spaces like this,” he said.
The apartments will have one bedroom. Once these nine are completed, Smith said they plan to build more that will be three stories, totaling 50 to 70 apartments in all.
“I know that this house may not be for everybody but no house is for everybody. This particular one is going to appeal to a certain type of people, and that’s really what I wanted. I wanted the people who enjoy art and architecture. That was really it,” Smith said.
People can put in deposits now for this unique living space, and Smith said they hope to be move-in ready by June.
