NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Hugh MacRae Park will be home to a new war memorial later this year.

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners on Monday unanimously approved a proposal to spend $60,000 to build a Gold Star Families Memorial near the pond at the park. Family members of military members who die while in service are honored with the label of a Gold Star family. The plan is to put the new memorial near an existing war memorial.

The project is part of the Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, which helps communities place Gold Star memorials. There are twenty such monuments in existence across the country, with another four dozen in progress.

The lowest qualified bidder is a monument company out of Kentucky. The project is expected to be finished by late September this year.
