Beached Dolphins were Old, had Parasites

AUGUST 25, 2005 -- There's new information about the dolphins that beached themselves on Topsail Island earlier this week. They were found just before 6:00am Monday.

UNC Wilmington researcher Ann Pabst says the dolphins were elderly and had internal parasites. She says each had a handful of teeth when they should have more than 100.

Twelve of the 15 dolphins died on the beach.  Three of them were helped back out to sea.

Dr. Pabst says it will be weeks before the exact cause of death is clear, but she says their age and the parasites certainly were a factor.
