Whale Beaches Itself in Holden Beach

AUGUST 15, 2005 -- A whale beached itself in Holden Beach Monday night.

A large crowd gathered around it near the Holden Beach fishing pier. The operator of the pier called 911 around 9:00pm to report the beached whale.  Pier workers say the older male pygmy sperm whale was in pretty bad shape when it first washed up. It has since died.

Witnesses say it appears the whale is about six to seven feet long.

State marine officials as well as experts from UNC Wilmington have been called in, along with other authorities. They're working to determine how the whale died. Some on the scene believe it died due to natural causes.
