WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Southern Combo Tennis Championships started Thursday at Empie Park in Wilmington.
Nearly 2,400 men and women are playing in the event, which is centered at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex, but matches are going on at courts around the county until Nov. 5. Play lasts from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
"At this point, it's just all about having fun and the camaraderie (with) other women and men from around the state and it's a tribute to the hard work that they put in throughout the whole season," one of the players said.
The players, who range in age from 18 to 65 and older, will be back in town to play again Nov. 9-12.
