WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -
More than 2,000 athletes competed in the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina triathlon, named the Beach2Battleship Triathlon.
The course is composed of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike course, and 13.1-mile run.
The race began in Wrightsville Beach, continued in the coastal countryside and Greenfield Lake, and concluded in downtown Wilmington across from the USS North Carolina Battleship.
At the finish line, athletes warmed down with food, water, and medical care if necessary.
Alex Appleby, a triathlete from Raleigh, said the weather conditions were beautiful, and she was able to set a personal best time. She also had plans to relax post-race: "Kind of lay on the floor until I reboot myself," said Appleby. "And then probably go out for some drinks and celebrate."
