Sophomore Kendall Bender collected 11 kills, hit .647 and finished with eight blocks as UNCW dealt Colonial Athletic Association leader Northeastern its first loss in conference play with a 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-20) win on Thursday at Hanover Hall.
The Seahawks snapped a three-match losing skid with the win to improve to 8-13 overall and 2-7 in the league. The Huskies saw their record fall to 15-7 and 8-1 in the CAA.
Bender paced the UNCW lineup with 11 kills as the Seahawks out-hit the Huskies, .229-.154. Her eight blocks also keyed UNCW at the net as the Blue and Teal finished with a 13-6 advantage in blocks.
Joining Bender in double figure kills was senior Sydney Brock with 10 and she added five blocks of her own. Six different Seahawks posted at least three blocks on the match.
NU's Amy Underdown held match-high honors with 17 kills followed by Brigitte Bursescu with 11.
The Huskies Gabrielle Eyl posted a match-best 20 digs.
With the win, the two programs split their season series. Five of the seven sets in the two matches were decided by two points.
The Seahawks continue their tough stretch on Saturday when they host defending conference champion James Madison.
