JULY 29, 2005 -- Wilmington Police officers paced the hospital halls waiting for information about one of their own.

Early Friday morning police say Sgt. Mike Fey was involved in a shootout with Larry Harrison, 21, at Houston Moore housing project.

"A foot chase occurred. They caught the suspect who turned and fired at the officers and hit Sgt. Mike Fey," said Chief Ralph Evangelous.

Police say Fey was shot at least once in the neck. Another officer opened fire at Harrison and killed him. Police have not identified that officer.

Fey is a 14 year veteran of the department, working in the patrol unit. Out of uniform, he is married and a father of two children.

Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett said Harrison shot at a bondsman in Brunswick County on Thursday. Authorities are not sure how Harrison ended up in the Houston Moore Complex.

Apparently, Harrison had been shot earlier in the week and checked himself into the Brunswick County Hospital under the assumed name of Michael Galloway.

Sheriff Hewett said he has never seen anyone as young as Harrison with such a lengthy criminal history.

"I know he has a mother and someone who loves him, but I have a problem seeing him as anyone other than a career criminal," said Hewett.

Harrison's career as a criminal is now over and Mike Fey's career enforcing the law is in jeopardy.
