SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) -

The Cape Fear Commuter Challenge, which organizers say encourages people to use sustainable modes of transportation, will run from Monday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 29.

"People can participate by bicycling, taking the bus, walking/running, carpooling/vanpooling, skateboarding, driving an electric vehicle, driving a hybrid vehicle, or working from home. Trips to/from work, to/from school, running errands, and to get children to/from school count as part of the Commuter Challenge," the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization said in a release Friday.

Those interested in participating should download the My Open Road app on a smart phone and set up a profile. When you start your commute you will choose the mode of transportation, select 'start’ when you leave and ‘stop’ when you arrive. The app will determine the pounds of CO2 saved from being emitted into the air by using your mode of transportation.

At the end of the Challenge, winners will be determined by the pounds of CO2 saved. Prizes include kayak rentals, stand up paddle board rentals, staycations at local hotels, local restaurant gift cards, accessories and services from the local bike shops, car washes, and prizes from Wave Transit. Winners will be announced by Nov. 6.
