State officials are investigating after a large drainage pipe fell on a truck driver and severely injured the man at a construction site in Wilmington.
According to Jason Tyson, spokesperson for the NC Department of Labor, the accident happened Wednesday morning at the intersection of Burnett Boulevard and South Front Street where crews are working on the Greenfield Lake culvert replacement project.
Tyson said crews with Mountain Creek Contractors were loading four 50-foot drainage pipes onto a flatbed truck when one of the pipes rolled off the truck and struck a driver for Skeets Auto Body Repair.
The man suffered a broken leg, a broken pelvis, and a compression fracture in his back. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment where he remained hospitalized as of Thursday afternoon.
Tyson said the state's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened a formal inquiry into the accident to see if proper safety protocols were followed.
