WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Vivian St. Juste said just 12 days apart, Hurricanes Irma and Maria brought wind and rain that destroyed her home on St. Thomas. She said she watched as wind stripped the trees near her home bare within hours.

"It was terrifying," she said. "To begin with, to experience the hurricane and the wind and the rain, and to look at trees that were fully green to bare sticks within a few hours, that was frightening."

St. Juste is staying with family in Wilmington, but her friends and family members still on St. Thomas remain on her mind. She works for the Family Resource Center (FRC), a non-profit agency that assists victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

For now, she says that mission also includes helping other storm victims.

"There's a lot that still needs to be done," she said. "We need funding. We need supplies, and we need you to find agencies that you can trust that will provide items directly to the people on the ground to the families that need it."

St. Juste said many people on the island are still without electricity and need protection against mosquitoes. She said power likely won't be fully restored for months, and right now it feels as though people have forgotten those on the island still in need of help.

"Visitors depend on us to be beautiful and welcoming, and we're going to have to depend on those same visitors and others who admire our used to be beautiful place to help us get restored again," she said.

You can find more information on how to help the FRC here.
