WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Hundreds gathered at the Wilmington Convention Center Wednesday for the She ROCKS Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser Luncheon 2017. According to the organization's website, the event was completely sold out.

The keynote speaker was Shannon Miller, a gymnast who has seven Olympic and nine World Championship medals. Miller is also an ovarian cancer survivor, and advocates for awareness and research for the disease.

"Every woman going through a cancer diagnoses, every person going through a cancer diagnosis, the journey is different for each of us," Miller said, "But the one thing I think we can all agree on is the importance of fighting each and every day."

Miller said the lessons she learned to become a world-class athlete were the same as she underwent surgery and chemotherapy treatment.

"It is about setting goals, and it may not be the goal to compete at the Olympic Games, for me it was the goal of walking twice around our dining room table," she said, "And it was a good day if I could get up and get dressed and do that."

She ROCKS (Research Ovarian Cancer Knowledge Support) is a non-profit organization aimed at bringing awareness to ovarian cancer through research funding, and by helping women who are currently facing a cancer diagnosis.
