H2GO candidates participate in forum

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Six candidates vying for three seats on the H2GO Board of Commissioners answered questions at a community forum Wednesday night.

It was standing room only for the event in the Leland Town Hall. The forum was hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Lower Cape Fear.

Three of the candidates, Bill Beer, Brayton Willis and Donald Yousey, are opposed to the proposed H2GO reverse osmosis plant.

Beer and the other candidates agreed they weren't against RO as a filtration system, but they do think any plant should use as a regional approach.

"If it was determined that we needed reverse osmosis, then Brunswick County should be the ones to build it," Beer said. "The reasons are the reasons I stated before. They have the experience. They have the know-how. They have a record of many, many years of supplying water for us."

The other three candidates, Ron Jenkins, Carl Antos and Rodney McCoy, are in favor of the proposed project.

Jenkins, who is seeking re-election, said the RO plant was the only way to guarantee safe drinking water right now.

"We have a plan, but when I look at the three other guys sitting on this stage tonight, I haven't seen a plan to clean up the water," Jenkins said. "If we wait for the county, then it might take 10 years for that to happen. We are saying that we can give our customers clean and affordable water."

Antos is also seeking re-election to the board.

The three seats will be filled during elections on Nov. 7.
