The Wilmington property on College Road that used to be home to Kmart may become homes for UNCW students.
Cape Fear Development submitted plans to turn the area at 819 South College into a mixed-use development called The Hamilton.
The planning documents include two four-story student housing buildings and a third building with one floor of retail space and three floors of student housing for a total of 899 beds.
There are also plans for two parking garages and surface parking for a total of more than 1,000 spaces for vehicles.
According to a senior at UNCW, the extra housing is necessary.
"I believe that on campus it gets a little crowded and it's very limited to find a place on campus," Andrew Preston said. "So I believe having that extra housing off campus wouldn't hurt and it would give us more options for off campus."
Nancy Deesch, the manager at neighboring College Diner, said she agreed that UNCW needs more student housing, but said this project would make traffic on South College worse.
"I would say it would be a good thing for students, but it might be not a good thing for the area," Deesch said. "But they could use some more housing. I know that.”
Deesch did say the complex will bring more business to the diner.
WECT reached out to the developer for a comment, but hasn't heard back.
We are also waiting to hear back from UNCW's Office of Housing and Residence Life regarding how many students live off campus versus on campus.
