Many in Southport Oppose Marina Sale

JULY 28, 2005 -- There was a big turn-out at a meeting in Southport Wednesday. At issue was whether the state agency that owns the public marina should sell the facility to developers.

Hundreds showed up for a hearing held by the state port authority. Some of them were Southport residents. Others were boaters, virtually all of them were opposed to the potential sale.

Several developers have offered to buy the marina and their plans include keeping it open, but opponents say it would put a popular boat access at risk.

The State Port Authority will meet Thursday and could decide whether to proceed with the sale of the marina.
