Former Whiteville cop charged with impersonating officer

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) -

A former Whiteville police cop has been arrested and charged with impersonating an officer.

Sergio Hakeem Reed, 30, of Brunswick, was stopped by Whiteville police on North Madison Street at approximately 7 a.m. Sunday morning and taken into custody on a warrant issued by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office on Sept. 21.

According to Whiteville officials, the warrant states that Reed displayed an old Whiteville Police Department identification badge after being stopped for speeding by a deputy with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.

Reed has been charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer, window tinting violation, and speeding. He was booked under a $2,000 bond.

Whiteville officials said that Reed was terminated from the police department on Dec. 16, 2016.
