Warning: Don’t fall for financial aid scams

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A warning for you about scams involving financial aid.

Organizations claiming to provide guarantees about financial aid in exchange for fees are beginning to show up across North Carolina, according to the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) and the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NCASFAA).

The agencies report that the scammers are targeting victims through phone calls, mail, emails and websites.

Warning signs:

  • Companies that ask you to sign a contract to provide promises of better financial aid and scholarships.
  • Companies that promise more financial aid for a small fee, usually by attending a seminar.

If a scammer has contacted you, you are asked to report it to the Federal Trade Commission.

If you are looking for help with financial aid, you can speak with someone at the CFNC call center by calling 866-866-CFNC (2362).
