NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Half of all students drop out of music programs in middle and high school because they can't afford to be part of the band.
The "We Just Want to Play" volleyball tournament will raise money in hopes of preventing young ones from dropping music and quitting the band.
The New Hanover High School Band Boosters organized the tournament, which will happen Sept. 23 at Captain Bill's.
This is the first year for the event.
NHHS has about 75 students in the band. Some come from socioeconomically-challenged homes, according to the boosters group.
The goal is to raise $5,000 for the band, which will help it purchase and repair of instruments and provide uniforms to students who might otherwise be unable to afford them.
