WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW News Release) - CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Senior Thomas Eldridge matched his career-low round on Tuesday when he fashioned a seven-under-par 65 in the final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge to finish tied for fifth and help UNCW to a third-place showing at the Cedar Rapids Country Club.
"I'm extremely proud of this group for fighting all week and really turning a corner today," said UNCW interim head coach Daniel Bowden. "The golf course demanded precision and we executed when we had to."
NC State held off host Iowa by two strokes for the team championship and Benjamin Shipp gave NCSU a sweep of the tournament, winning medalist honors by two strokes over Iowa's Alex Schaake.
For Eldridge, it was the fourth time he matched his career-low round, all coming in the past two seasons. It was his second top-10 finish of the fall and the 12th for his career. Eldridge rode seven birdies on the final 18 holes and finished with a tournament-leading 15.
UNCW tied NC State for the tournament lead with 50 birdies.
"Thomas' 65 today was a phenomenal round and provided us with the spark we needed. I look forward to continuing our great play at Chapel Hill."
UNCW's Reese McFarlane and Pat Cover both closed out the tournament with under-par scores of 70 and 71, respectively.
UNCW's 281 in the third round was the low-round for the day.
The Seahawks return to action at the UNC Intercollegiate on Oct. 7-8.
