League of Women Voters to host series of candidate forums

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The Municipal Elections are just around the corner, so the League of Women Voters of the Cape Fear is sponsoring a series of candidate forums in Brunswick County next month. 

The date and location of each Forum and the contests to be covered at each are listed below:

Leland Municipal Election Candidate Forum is on Wednesday, October 4, at 6:30 at Leland Town Hall.    

Candidates will be running for City of Leland Mayor, Council, and H2go Commissioner. Leland Town Hall is located at 102 Town Hall Drive off of Village Road NE in Leland.  Residents are encouraged to submit questions for the candidates at leland2017quest@gmail.com  

Southport Municipal Election Candidate Forum is on Monday, October 16, at 6:30 at the Community Building, 223 E. Bay Street.    

Candidates will be running for City of Southport Mayor, Alderman Ward 1, and Alderman Ward 2. Residents are encouraged to submit questions for the candidates at spt2017quest@gmail.com  

Oak Island Municipal Election Candidate Forum is on Wednesday, October 18, at 6:00 at the Town Hall, 4601 E. Oak Island Drive.      

Candidates will be running for mayor and town council.  WECT's Jon Evans will moderate this forum and it will be televised on the Oak Island Community Channel 8. Residents are encouraged to submit questions for the candidates at oki2017quest@gmail.com 

The Municipal Elections will take place Nov. 7, 2017.

    Congressman David Rouzer (R-NC7) said he welcomes the input of students across the country on how to keep schools safe but does not support tougher gun control measures to do it. “This is an issue that has a lot of complexities to it,” Rep. Rouzer said. “If you were to ban all guns tomorrow, I think you’d still have school shootings.".

    A pair of incumbent District Attorneys and one incumbent Sheriff will be unopposed as they seek new terms in the 2018 elections. The filing deadline passed at Noon on Wednesday, bringing a flurry of new candidates into races for local and state elected offices.  Incumbent Sheriff Ed McMahon of New Hanover County. along with District Attorneys Ben David (5th Judicial District) and Jon David (13th Judicial District) did not receive any challengers during the filing period.
