Maria slowly departs northern Caribbean islands, Jose meanders near New England

SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WECT) -

Your First Alert Weather Team continues to monitor tropical systems Jose and Maria.

JOSE: Mired in a stagnant steering pattern, Tropical Storm Jose or its remnants are likely to meander and swirl over the cool waters off the Mid-Atlantic or New England states for many days. We will, of course, keep an eye on it.

MARIA: Sadly, powerful Hurricane Maria made another landfall Wednesday morning... this time along the southeast coast of Puerto Rico. Maria will divorce itself from the northern Caribbean islands of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola through the day Thursday.

Most long-range computer models suggest Maria could exploit the same break in a mid-level high pressure ridge that Jose did... and thus pass east of the southeastern U.S. coast this weekend and early next week. But, it's still early. Please continue to monitor powerful Maria in case these trends change.

At the very least, Maria will send ocean swells to the Carolinas late this week, over the weekend, and potentially early next week as well... and this swell will manifest in heavier-than-average surf and an enhanced risk of rip currents through that period.

BEWARE OF MISINFORMATION: As you seek online information on these tropical systems, watch out for "hype sites" and provocative social media posts that only showcase the more dire computer forecast model solutions.
