JULY 15, 2005 -- On an overcast, starless night, fireworks twinkled over Pleasure Island.
Various shades of red, blue, and green exploded for roughly five minutes Thursday night, but it wasn't a holiday celebration. It's the beginning of a weekly attraction to draw tourists and increase business on the boardwalk.
Fireworks will ignite every Thursday through Labor Day.
For the first show the plan seems to be working. Salesman made their way through the crowds offering glow sticks and scanner balls. Vacationers enjoyed the view and their meals on outside patios.
On the boardwalk folks of all ages stood craning their necks to watch the rockets. Most of them say they'll be repeat viewers.
While the fireworks drew a pretty good size crowd, the town is hoping as word spreads more people will make their way to the boardwalk.
