JULY 12, 2005 -- A panel of experts says Southeastern North Carolina should once again get passenger rail service, but it could be years before you can catch a train out of town.
The North Carolina State Department of Transportation released a study proposing two passenger lines out of Wilmington. One would go to Fayetteville and the other would go to Goldsboro where passengers could then connect to trains heading to Raleigh.
The DOT proposes construction of a train station in the block bounded by 3rd, 4th, Red Cross and Campbell Streets.
The site will serve trains, but will also be a station for buses and taxis.
