JUNE 27, 2005 -- Monday was a day many Columbus County residents have waited for.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for a prison they hope will create an upturn in the local economy.
Governor Mike Easley and other politicians used golden shovels to turn the soil off highway 904 west of Tabor City.
The 1,000 bed, high security prison will employ more than 400 people. This will be one of the ten largest employers in Columbus County.
Easley, a former prosecutor, says the facility will help the local economy and ease the strain on the prison system.
Construction on the prison is expected to be completed in 2008.
