WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW News Release) - Josh Roberson pitched three perfect innings and the UNCW pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts as the Seahawks beat visiting High Point, 7-3, on Wednesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 19-21 with the non-conference home win while the Panthers dropped to 22-18 and 10-10 on the road.
Roberson (1-1), who made his first appearance since Mar. 4, struck out two in a predetermined pitch-count start of 30 pitches. Austin Easter, Chris Joyner and Clark Cota combined for 5.1 innings of shutout relief.
Offensively, Brian Mims, Ryan Jeffers and Robbie Thorburn each had two hits. Jeffers belted his ninth home run of the season and Daniel Stack doubled in two runs.
Josh Greene paced High Point with two hits.
Starter Jordan Sergent (1-1), the reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week, allowed four runs, three earned on four hits and a walk in three innings of work.
Up next: UNCW opens a key Colonial Athletic Association series on Friday when it hosts Delaware at 6 p.m.
How it happened: The Seahawks jumped in front in the second inning when Jeffers lined his ninth homer of the season over the wall in left for a 1-0 lead. UNCW would add three runs later in the inning, including two on a Stack double. Cole Weiss' RBI single one batter later capped the four-run outburst.
