UNCW women's tennis team falls in CAA Finals

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Top-seeded and 50th-ranked William & Mary dropped the doubles point, but bounced back with four singles victories to win its 25th Colonial Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championship by edging UNCW, 4-2, early Sunday at the Piedmont Tennis Center.
 
Playing indoors because of inclement weather, the Tribe improved to 14-10 and locked up the CAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. W&M won its third straight CAA crown and fourth in five years.
 
The Seahawks, the first No. 6 seed in the 33-year history of the event to reach the CAA finals, finished their season with an 11-8 record after upsetting No. 3 Charleston and No. 2 Elon to make Sunday's championship match.
 
The Seahawks took the early point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to gain the early momentum.  After W&M won the first match off the court at No. 3 doubles, the No. 2 team ofAnnika Sillanpaa and Alix Theodossiou defeated Natalia Perry and Cecily Wuenscher, 6-3, andMadara Straume and Sabrina Barisano upset No. 79 Marie Faure and Lauren Goodman, 7-6 (3), at No. 1 doubles.
 
W&M rallied with three straight singles victories, however, to build a 3-1 advantage before Straume knocked off Ekaterina Stepanova, 6-3, 7-5, at the top of the lineup to improve to 16-3 in singles play this season.
 
But the Tribe clinched the match when No. 2 player Marie Faure came from behind to defeat UNCW senior Annika Sillanpaa, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
