WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

After finding her dog collapsed in front of her door, Khadijah Motley says he's lucky to be alive.

She said Hennessy ran out of the house Tuesday night, and after hours of searching, they found him back at her apartment.

“It was early in the morning when we saw him again," Motley said. "He was at my front door with gashes on his side, and the one by his leg was like a big hole."

Motley rushed Hennessy to A Country Clinic, where he underwent emergency surgery. She said she was heartbroken to learn that her dog may have been attacked.

“They said it looks like someone may have stabbed him, like it went in and then curved up,” she said.

Daniel Wilson is the owner of the clinic. He said the dog's injuries are atypical.

“At this point, I can’t say what the cause was, but I feel confident it was not hit by a car, and I feel pretty confident that it was not a fight with another animal,” Wilson said.

Hennessy is recovering, but Motley says since Tuesday the dog barely eats or sleeps.

“They’ve taken a lot from him,” she said. “He’s going to be OK because we’re going to make sure he’s OK. We’re going to take care of him and get him through therapy, but whoever did this has to pay. It’s just the honest truth.”

Motley said she filed a report with New Hanover County's Animal Control Unit and that an Animal Control vehicle was patrolling the area near Motley's apartment.
