(RNN) - Say goodbye to Arlene, everybody.

The tropical storm that formed Thursday over the Atlantic joined forces with an extratropical low and became post-tropical Friday, National Hurricane Center forecasters said in its final advisory about the storm.

A tropical storm and a post-tropical system differ in how convection powers the storm, the National Hurricane Center said.

Currently located more than 1,000 miles west of the Azores, it is moving quickly southwestward at 23 mph, packing winds of 50 mph.

Forecasters expect the storm to maintain the southwestward heading until it dissipates later Friday.

The tropical system is not a hazard to land.

Arlene became the first named storm of the year, well ahead of hurricane season, which doesn't start until June 1.

Last year, Hurricane Alex formed in the mid-Atlantic in January, making landfall in the Azores as a tropical storm, CNN said. It was fourth known storm in the first month of the year since records started being kept in 1851.

A seasonably warm and humid summer air mass will govern the Cape Fear Region into the weekend. The approach of front and moisture and a glance from the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy will boost rain chances at times. A dose of marginally cooler air with lower rain chances is possible by the middle of next week.
