WINTERSET, IA (WHO-DT/CNN) - Police say two teen arsonists are behind the fire at one of the iconic bridges that inspired The Bridges of Madison County novel, movie and Broadway play.

Officers arrested 18-year-old Joel Davis Wednesday afternoon. Davis is accused of pouring gasoline on the Cedar Bridge Saturday morning. Police say 17-year-old Alex Hoff, arrested Tuesday, actually lit the fire that destroyed the historic bridge.

Sheriff Jason Barnes saw both Davis and Hoff on WHO-DT’s newscast, visiting the scene of the crime Saturday morning. Cameras captured the two at the bridge, looking at the damage along with other spectators. Barnes said he was always taught and trained that it’s common for arsonists to return to the scene of the crime.

“I didn’t know they’d be on the news and be interviewed, and that’s a different one,” Barnes said. “That’s a different thing there.

Barnes said investigators know what happened, and now they need to find out why. To do that, he said, they will need to travel out of state to speak to others who might be involved.
