PGA pro spotted practicing at Eagle Point, site of upcoming Wells Fargo Championship

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The winner of the 2012 U.S. Open was spotted at Eagle Point Golf Club Wednesday afternoon, practicing for the upcoming Wells Fargo Championship.

Webb Simpson, who is a Raleigh native, is a member of the prestigious Eagle Point Golf Club and says he hopes his knowledge of the course will give him an advantage.

"I've been thinking about it for a long time and it's always fun to think of a tournament, a PGA tour event that you know so well," Simpson said.

Simpson is no stranger to the area and frequently visits. While he grew up in Raleigh, he spent his summers playing golf in Wilmington.

"This is where I learned the game, right down the road at the Landfall Country Club," Simpson said.

He didn't talk about his practice Wednesday but said the Eagle Point course is ready for the Wells Fargo Championship.

"The whole course looks amazing," Simpson said. "It didn't need a facelift, but what they've done has made what was great even better."

Eagle Point Golf Club will host the Wells Fargo Championship May 1-7. It's estimated 25,000 people are expected to attend.
