Seahawks sweep JMU behind strong performance from Sharpe

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW News Release) - Zarion Sharpe became the first UNCW freshman since 2007 to throw a complete game as UNCW completed a sweep of James Madison with a 4-1 win on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 5-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 16-18 overall. The Dukes, meanwhile, dropped to 18-17 on the season and 3-9 in the league.

Sharpe needed just 109 pitches in going the distance for his second win in as many starts. The last Seahawk rookie to toss a complete game was Daniel Cropper in 2007 on Apr. 20, in an 8-0 win over Towson at Brooks Field. Sharpe allowed a run on four hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Offensively for UNCW, Ryan Jeffers finished with two hits and drove in two runs. He belted his sixth home run of the season leading off a three-run second inning as UNCW took a 3-1 lead. Robbie Thorburn doubled twice and Cole Weiss added two hits of his own.

Josh Silvestri (3-3) took the loss, working sixth innings and allowing four runs.

Zach Tondi homered for the Dukes lone run. His round tripper came in the second inning and was his eighth of the season.
