Anderson leads field at CAA women's golf championship


WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Lyberty Anderson surged to an early lead with a two-under-par 70 as UNCW opened the Colonial Athletic Association women's golf championship in third place following the first round at the Ford's Colony Country Club on Friday afternoon.

Led by Anderson, the Seahawks carded a 304 team score and will begin the second round just eight strokes behind the College of Charleston, which claimed the early advantage after shooting a 296 team score. Towson is one stroke behind the Cougars in second place after finishing with a 297 team score.

Anderson, who posted her eighth round of par or better this season, holds a one-stroke edge after posting four birdies in the opening round, including consecutive birdies on the eighth, ninth and 10th holes.

Sophomore Ellinoora Moisio is tied for fifth place after posting a one-over-par 73 while freshman Thao My Nguyen has a share of 21st place with a 79 in the first round.

Junior Alaina Yeatts shot an 82 in the opening round to finish in a tie for 29th place while junior Kayla Thompson followed with an 83 for a piece of 33rd place.

The second round of the CAA Championship is scheduled for Saturday morning.
