WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore righthander Alex Royalty was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week following a career-best performance in a 3-0 win over North Carolina Central in the series opener last Friday.
Royalty shared the award with Delaware's Brandon Walter, who struck out 11 over eight innings in a 2-1 win over Northeastern.
Royalty, who improved to 4-2 with the non-conference win, struck out a career-high 12 while pitching eight innings, also a career-best. He walked none and scattered three hits over eight shutout innings. Royalty dropped his earned run average almost 70 points with the strong outing.
Royalty's previous best strikeout total was seven, set as a freshman and equaled twice this season. His 12 strikeouts were the most by a Seahawk since two-time CAA Pitcher-of-the-Year Mat Batts fanned 12 in a win at William & Mary during the 2014 season.
UNCW now has had three players earn CAA weekly honors as Royalty joins Casey Golden and Nick Feight were consecutive Player-of-the-Week honorees early this season.
The Seahawks close out their brief three-game road swing on Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. start at East Carolina. UNCW then returns to conference play on Apr. 14, when it hosts James Madison for three games.
