JUNE 22, 2005 -- The new Wilmington police station is still more than a year away, but the ground is ready, and so are the officers who will call it home.
Wednesday evening, Chief Ralph Evangelous and city council members broke ground at the site on Bess Street. Several dozen people showed up for the ceremony.
The 86,000 square foot facility will have everything from a fitness area to a large meeting room. The old building on Red Cross Street has been deteriorating since 1961 when WPD moved in.
The new building should be complete by September of next year.
