JUNE 22, 2005 -- Wilmington has an international airport, an international port and now, an international consulate.
Mayor Spence Broadhurst announced Wednesday that Wilmington is now the site for a new consulate that will serve as a liason between Wilmington and the country of Belize.
It will also provide information about the economy, society, culture and tourism for Belize and Wilmington.
Mayor Broadhurst is happy to welcome the new consulate.
"The trend over the years has been to send the consulates to larger cities, and the state department really looked very closely at it and picked Wilmington. We're very proud that they saw fit to do that," says Mayor Broadhurst.
The consulate will also issue passports, visas and work permits.
