Manhunt in Brunswick County

JUNE 22, 2005 -- The search for a fugitive in Brunswick County is still on while the suspect remains on the run.

Johnny Ray Pope led Northwest Police on a chase on a motorcycle and then collided with a police vehicle early Wednesday morning. He then ran off into thick woods in the area around Blue Banks Loop Road.

A police dog was called in and picked up Pope's scent but wasn't able to find him.

Law enforcement officials also brought in a highway patrol helicopter from Raleigh to help with the search.

Pope is a wanted felon out of Florida.  He also has warrants out in New Hanover and Brunswick counties for crimes such as breaking and entering. Now he is wanted on several other charges including assault on an officer.

Sergeant Joseph Scoggins of the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department thinks Pope is armed and dangerous.  "We have located a weapon and some clothing, but that still doesn't mean he's not armed."

If you have any information that could help authorities, call the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department.
