WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens of news police cruisers could be on the roads of Wilmington soon.
A resolution authorizing the purchase of 45 police vehicles and a van at a cost of more than $1.156 million is on the Wilmington City Council's agenda for Tuesday's meeting.
According to material put together for city council, the vehicles will be 2017 Dodge Charger Pursuits. The cost of each vehicle with options and mats is $25,168.
During Monday morning's agenda meeting, council member Neil Anderson asked city staff why so many cars were being purchased at one time instead of splitting up the number over multiple years and lessening the large cost all at once.
A representative with the fleet management department told council that there was a large number of cars purchased at the same time in the past and they've reached replacement age at the same time. He said the police department has a total of about 270 vehicles.
