Massive fire engulfs downtown Raleigh construction site; nearby buildings threatened

RALEIGH, NC (WRAL) -

An apartment building under construction in downtown Raleigh was engulfed in flames Thursday night.

The five-story building at West Jones and North Harrington Streets caught fire just after 10 p.m. The building is adjacent to the Glenwood South restaurant and bar district. 

The fire had escalated to a five-alarm blaze by 11 p.m. Emergency crews stayed on the scene throughout the night.

Nearby buildings and residents were evacuated on Thursday night and no injuries were reported, according to the Raleigh Police Department.

Robbie Rikard lives about a block from where the fire started. He said it quickly became an inferno.

"I was actually lying in bed in my condo where I don't have any windows, but I could see all this yellow light coming from the other side of my condo and I came out to see it and it was already a big fire by the time I got out," Rikard said in a telephone interview.
