JUNE 16, 2005 -- Opponents of a proposed landfill in Brunswick County rallied Wednesday night across the river.
It was a strategy session for a group fighting the proposed Hugo Neu landfill and recycling facility in Navassa.
Several dozen opponents met in Wilmington's Northeast Library to view slide shows and films that question the merits of the landfill. They were also urged to call state legislators in an effort to give a boost to a bill stuck in committee.
The legislation would take control of the proposed site away from the town of Navassa and give it to Brunswick County. It's a move that would likely stop the project.
Although the bill is being blocked by a powerful senator from Craven County, local opponents are not giving up the fight.
Navassa town leaders say Hugo Neu would bring jobs and tax revenue to their community.
