BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
Brunswick County commissioners approved a grant that gives the sheriff's office a discount on new-age forensic software.
Secure View makes products that access locked cell phones and tablets. They service law enforcement agencies across the nation and soon Brunswick County Sheriff's Office will be one of them.
In their application for the grant, the sheriff's office said it takes in 25-30 phones monthly. Secure View said this new package could breathe new life into cases that previously went cold with locked cell phones stuck in evidence lockers.
The most expensive purchase, "Burner Breaker," is a robotic arm capable of breaking into phones, including burners and throw-aways. "Burner Breaker" costs just under $11,000. The sheriff's office will use about $7,000 of its drug seizure funds to pay for it.
Once Secure View receives the money from the sheriff's office, it can start training deputies and investigators on the new technology.
There is no timetable for when that training will start.
