WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Sharks will soon have a new owner.
National Sports Services, based in Topeka, Kan., has a letter of intent to acquire the baseball team and is working through the process, according to President Matt Perry. The group has been approved to own a franchise by the Coastal Plain League. Perry was not able to go in depth on the group's plans for the team as it is still working on the final ownership paperwork.
Since 2014, the team has been owned by Brad Smith with Smith Family Baseball Wilmington, LLC. Smith is based in Kannapolis. The Sharks compete in the Coastal Plain League, which features summer collegiate baseball teams.
The National Sports Services (NSS) website states that it provides multiple services to the sports industry, including team ownership. The organization has franchises in minor league baseball, professional hockey and arena football.
