Coast Guard Searches for Distressed Swimmer

JUNE 12, 2005 -- An extensive search for what could have been a swimmer in distress turns up nothing in Wrightsville Beach.

Crews searched by air and by sea, hoping to spot the man that a witness claims went under and never came up.

The sighting happened around 2:00 Sunday afternoon.

For about three hours, the Coast Guard and others searched the rough waters for any sign of the man.

Nothing has turned up in the search. However, someone standing on Johnnie Mercer's Pier said he is sure he saw a white man in the water near the pier.

The Coast Guard called off their active search around 5:00 Sunday evening.  They pulled back their boats and helicopters.

Since there have been no reports of anyone missing, they say it's unlikely someone is still in the water.
