JUNE 6, 2005 -- Two buoys launched by the Coastal Ocean Research and Monitoring Program at the UNCW Center for Marine Science will provide real-time oceanographic information. This information will be available on the internet.
A research vessel anchored two buoys in the Atlantic Ocean Monday afternoon. One buoy is 27 miles off the coast of Wrightsville Beach. Another buoy was placed five miles off the shore.
The buoys will provide information on air temperature, air pressure, humidity, solar radiation and water temperature.
The information will be available at www.cormp.org .
The Center for Marine Science has submerged instruments in the ocean in the past. Dive teams had to travel to those sites to retrieve the information each month. This is the first time an instrument has been able to send the data back to researchers.
