New Bill Could Stop Hugo Neu Landfill Plans

JUNE 1, 2005 -- There's a new motion to stop plans to build a landfill and recycling center in Navassa.

The Hugo Neu project would be built on a 750-acre site off Mount Misery Road. Representative Bonner Stiller filed a bill that would reverse Navassa's annexation of that site.

The land would once again belong to Brunswick County. Then, officials would have to determine how the land is zoned and how it can be used.

Opponents of Hugo Neu believe the landfill would be an eyesore and a threat to the environment. Supporters say the project will bring in good jobs.
