WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

A Wilmington man confronted a would-be thief in his driveway early Monday morning, and police arrested the suspect and an alleged accomplice a short time later, according to Wilmington Police Department officials.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m., a resident in the 7000 block of Finian Drive told officers he noticed the interior light in his vehicle was on. He said he then saw a female suspect standing in his driveway and confronted her.

A driver in a SUV that appeared to be waiting for the female suspect fled the scene. While the victim tried to detain the female suspect, the SUV returned and drove into the victim's yard. The victim then let go of the female suspect as he got out of the way of the approaching vehicle.

The two suspects - Christopher Lee Smith and Catherine Elizabeth Plyler - fled the scene but were taken into custody a short time later.

Smith, 41, has been charged with breaking or entering a motor vehicle, sex offender - failure to change address, conspiracy to commit felony larceny and probation violation.

Plyer, 39 has been charged with breaking or entering a motor vehicle and conspiring to commit felony larceny.
