WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

The old Water Street parking deck, originally scheduled to close Wednesday in preparation for demolition, will remain open for public parking until Dec. 31.

People who come to the downtown area to eat and shop will now have more time to use the deck.

“I think that is going to be great for business once they rebuild,” said Stephanie Washburn an instructor at Pineapple Studios.  “Hopefully it will simulate the downtown area on the down side the noise has been a little bit disturbing during the yoga classes, but other than that I think it will be really good for us to have new growth.”

Crews are now expected to begin demolition on the deck in January.

Currently, crews are installing an underground structure that will house utilities from several companies beneath the deck. The structure, called a joint duct bank, will help streamline future construction and minimize utility interruptions.

Cleve Callison who works in the area said it’s something he will hate to see go.

“I have been parking here for about 2 years its very handy for me because my office is right across the street on front street and there are just other things I like about it too. If you park up here in the nice weather, you get a nice view of the riverfront," said Callison.

Work on the duct bank was expected to wrap up this week, but has been slowed by the presence of bedrock during excavation.

Redevelopment of the parking deck is a public/private mixed-use project that will include multi-story residential and retail space. In addition, it will maintain access to Bijou Park and reconnect Chestnut Street to Water Street, while providing public space at the foot of Chestnut Street.

Completion is expected to wrap up by mid-2019.
