COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

An East Columbus High School student was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly bring an unloaded handgun onto school property.

According to Columbus County Schools spokesperson Kelly Jones, a student got off the bus prior to school starting, and ducked into the locker room, which can be accessed before walking through the school’s metal detectors.

Michele Tatum with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office said school personnel witnessed the student enter the locker room, and watched as he returned without his backpack. School personnel instructed the student, identified as 16-year-old Jaylene Ray'Shawn Pyatt, of Bolton, to get his backpack. He reportedly did so, but bypassed the metal detectors when exiting the locker room.

Officials immediately entered the locker room, where they located the handgun hidden underneath an article of clothing.

When questioned, Pyatt did not provide a reason for bringing the gun on school property. He was charged with felony having a weapon on school property, and placed in the Columbus County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.

The school was placed on lockdown for precautionary measures. It was lifted at around 9:30 a.m.
