WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Members of the community are invited to join and celebrate Wilmington's diversity at the Gathering for Peace at Maides Park on Dec. 3. at 2 p.m.

The gathering will feature speeches by local activists, poetry readings and music. Local non-profit and community organizations will be available with information about resources and opportunities to become involved in community activism.

Local artists will be selling work inspired by the gathering, and 20 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Wilmington Progressive Coalition, a group that streamlines local non-profit organizations' efforts.

“Throughout the election season, and especially since the election’s conclusion, I’ve seen and talked to so many people who l hurt, attacked, and endangered by the highly-charged and aggressive rhetoric and actions of politicians and others that have fueled hate and division,” said Lauren Krouse, a Wilmington resident and UNCW graduate student in creative writing. “In the days after the election, I felt a desperate need to take action, and so came about the Wilmington Gathering for Peace. There aren’t easy answers for how to mend our nation, but finding ways to commune and get involved feels like a good place to start. I hope you’ll join us. We need to fight for peace now more than ever.”
