WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior guard Sarah Beal and sophomore guard Maddie Jolin each scored 17 points as Providence remained unbeaten after earning a 65-49 victory over UNCW at the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic inside Trask Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
The Friars, who are making their first-ever visit to Wilmington, improved to 5-0 on the season while the Seahawks saw their record drop to 2-2.
Beal made 8-of-13 field goal attempts en route to matching her season high while Jolin came off the bench to shoot 6-for-8 from the field, including an impressive 5-for-6 from three-point range.
Junior guard Madison Raque led UNCW in the loss by scoring 13 points with three rebounds and three assists while redshirt senior forward Jordan Henry added 10 points with six rebounds.
How It Happened: Providence used a strong shooting effort in the second quarter to take a 32-21 lead the Friars did not relinquish. Providence converted 9-of-12 field goal attempts, including a 3-for-4 effort from long range, while outscoring UNCW, 21-7, in the frame. Jolin paced the Friars by scoring 9 of her 17 points in the frame.
Game Notes: La Salle used a triple-double effort from Jasmine Alston to claim a 79-70 victory over Providence in the first game of the tournament … Alston scored 15 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and dished out 12 assists for the fourth triple-double in NCAA Division I this season … Providence and UNCW met for the first time ever in women’s basketball … UNCW wore its yellow uniforms for the first time this season, marking the fourth different uniform combination in four games … The Seahawks held Providence to just 5-for-16 shooting from the field in the first quarter, marking a season low for the Friars in the opening stanza … Raque scored in double figures for the third time in four games … Henry reached double figures in scoring for the second time in the last three contests … Redshirt senior guard Jasmine Steele matched her career high with eight assists … Led by Steele, the Seahawks recorded 15 assists on 19 made field goals … UNCW outrebounded Providence by a 34-32 margin, marking the first time the Seahawks held the advantage on the glass this season …
